Team GB gold medalist Joanna Rowsell 'gutted' after breaking collar bone in London cycling festival

The Prudential RideLondon weekend features four separate events designed to appeal to riders of all ages and abilities, with around 50,000 people taking part in a mass participation event that saw many of the capital's roads closed to traffic yesterday, and London mayor Boris Johnson among thousands of others taking part in a 100-mile road race today.

Cycle happy: Thousands of cyclists on the Mall Rowsell, who won gold in the team pursuit during last year's Games, was competing in the women's criterium race in and around St James's Park last night when she was involved in a pile-up in the final stages of the event.

Writing on Twitter, she said: "Well this is far from ideal.. In hospital with a broken collar bone. Thank you for all the messages. I will bounce back!"

She added this morning: "Absolutely gutted to be missing the @RideLondon 100 today for @actionmedres. Massive good luck to everyone riding. Will be an amazing day.

Ride London: Cyclists take part in a world record attempt during the first day of the RideLondon festival "Thank you everyone for all your lovely messages. In pain this morning but doing ok and getting looked after :-)"

The Grand Prix event, which saw competitors race a circuit in and around the central London park, was won by Rowsell's teammate Laura Trott, who said afterwards: "This feels like my event, so I felt I had to win. I'm so glad I did."

She sent a message of support to Rowsell on Twitter, writing: "Sending @JoannaRowsell lots of love to ?ihopeyourok ?youramazing."

The Grand Prix also saw a contest between the world's best junior cyclists while the capital's Paralympic legacy was celebrated with a handcycle race.

Cycle festival: Boris Johnson and Olympic cyclist Laura Trott at the launch of the event Today's Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 was expected to see around 50,000 cyclists taking part on a route that starts in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in east London - the scene of last year's Games - before taking them into the Surrey countryside.

Rugby World Cup winner Matt Dawson, two-time Olympic rowing champion James Cracknell, former Olympic champion sprint hurdler Sally Gunnell and actor Gary Kemp were among the famous faces taking part.

The event will finish on The Mall shortly before 150 professional cyclists race in the inaugural Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic on a similar route.

Organisers hope the two-day festival will boost the number of active cyclists in the UK, attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to London and Surrey, and raise large amounts of money for charity.

Still In The Hunt: Fire 2, Union 1, MLS #21 recap

Fire show the awesome power of a fully-operational early lead in rare road victory; Nyarko posts goal and assist in another all-action performance; Magee scores again to claim league lead

There used to be a book on Patrick Nyarko, and the book went something like this: Terrifying to defend on the dribble, but shoots like a U7 wingback. Concede space and edge toward cutting off the pass. Wait for him to run out of room. Last evening in Philadelphia, while most of the soccer world was gibbering over a certain new DP in Seattle, Patty Nyarko took to the field like a cartoon strongman, waved 'the book' at the crowd of over 18,000, and tore it in half with his bare hands.

Spurred by a goal and assist from their Ghanaian winger, the Fire won for only the second time this season outside Toyota Park, defeating Philadelphia 2-1. The win keeps Chicago within five points of the fifth and final playoff spot.

One of the characteristics of the Fire's disappointing early-season form was a tendency to start games in a funk - the Men in Red have played from behind game after game in 2013. Saturday was a different matter. The Fire were energetic and aggressive in the early going, and their sprightly start was rewarded with a rare first goal in the ninth minute.

The play started with Jeff Larentowicz stepping forward to claim a loose Union pass deep in Philadelphia's midfield zone. Big Red astutely offered the ball to Mike Magee, who took a touch and found Chris Rolfe pulling back into the space Larentowicz had vacated. Rolfe's return through ball to Magee got the MVP candidate into the penalty area, where both Philly centerbacks shifted to cover him. Seeing the space vanish, Magee opted to spray the ball wide to Joel Lindpere, who waited on the left flank.

Creeping in from the other side, Nyarko waited outside the back post, and when Rolfe - running hard near-post - let Lindpere's cross run, Patty was suddenly wide open 12 yards from net. And there's where the strong-man act happened: The book would have him darting to the endline, maybe trying to center to Rolfe or Magee, but instead Nyarko tore it asunder. Taking no extra touches, he lashed a shot to the back post which a shifting Zach MacMath couldn't lay a finger upon.

Given the precious commodity of an early lead, Chicago looked much more fluid and dangerous than the Union throughout the first half. The trio of Nyarko, Rolfe and Magee stayed in constant motion, using space well and conserving energy. At one point in the 31 minute, Magee got after Rolfe for pressing high on a back-pass to MacMath, gesturing toward the (open) space to his right. The message: Keep your powder dry and stay compact.

It appeared for a time that staying compact would be enough. With the exception of some Keystone Cops moments toward the end of the first half, the defensive shape of the Fire was impressively coherent throughout the evening. One sequence around the 55th minute was telling - Philadelphia held possession, and after a wayward pass the Fire looked to counter. Chicago's countering through ball was intercepted, though, and the Union jumped forward, hoping to find the Fire wrong-footed - only to find, after a single pass, that Chicago's two-banks-of-four shape was unbreached, waiting.

Given that Chicago weren't going to be picked apart, Philadelphia went to an aerial game, aided by several fouls in the attacking zone. On the night, the Union attempted 32 crosses - 32! - and the Fire committed 17 fouls, including six around the penalty area. The halftime withdrawal of Raymon Gaddis for newly-signed Fabinho brightened Philly's attack, as well - Fabinho's first involvement led to a rare bit of combination play from the Union, and set up Conor Casey for a pullback opportunity which trickled just wide.

The Union's bang-it-home approach tied the game in the 61st. A foul by Bakary Soumare set Seba Le Toux up for a free kick from the right wing, and his near-post service was into a dangerous area, just short of the near post. Sheanon Williams was well-marked, but laid out for the ball courageously. His bravery was rewarded by fate when he missed the ball on the full stretch but caught it on the bounce with his ass. Sean Johnson, stumbling while trying to change directions, could only watch as the ball wandered across the goal line. 1-1, Union, and the Fire's season trembled and shook.

It could've been worse but for Johnson. The Milkman, fresh-delivered from winning the Gold Cup, displayed his usual outstanding shot-stopping capability the few times Philadelphia broke through on goal. A double-fist save off Jack MacInerney in the 41st and a stunning one-hander in the 54th maintained the Fire's lead earlier in the game, and his cat-quick tip over the bar on Amobi Okugo's header in the 65th smothered what seemed to be a post-goal Philadelphia resurgence.

Frank Klopas clearly wasn't content with another road draw. In the 67th, he put on Dilly Duka and Quincy Amarikwa for the fading Lindpere and Rolfe. Chasing is tiring work, and now the Fire had to chase. But not for too long, though.

It was Nyarko, again, who made the goal. Much like last week - when Nyarko dispossessed Corey Ashe deep in his own end, then set up Magee for the tying goal - it started with an astute tackle. In the 75th, Philly new boy Leo Fernandez was two minutes into his debut for the squad when he finally got his first touch, but Patty didn't give him a chance to settle, pouncing on him at the top of the arc and winning the ball.

Future MLS MVP Magee had seen that movie before and alertly moved into a pocket of space high in the penalty box, where Nyarko's prompt pass left him time to survey his options. MacMath came steaming out from goal, but Magee calmly waited for him to spread out to cover the back post and shot over him. 2-1, Fire, in a must-win game, on the road, against a team in playoff position. We have wept and fasted, wept and prayed; has our moment come 'round at last?

The goal was Magee's 14th in MLS play this season, his eighth in 10 games since coming to Chicago, and gives him the lead in the Golden Boot race.

Chicago saw the match off expertly after claiming the lead with 15 minutes to play, aided by fresh legs from Klopas' surprisingly deft substitutions. Daniel Paladini joined Amarikwa and Duka off the bench, and each pressed and ran selflessly after coming on, allowing the tiring starters to stay compact.

The Fire (8-9-4) play DC United Wednesday at Toyota Park in the U.S. Open Cup semifinal before returning to league play vs. Montreal next Saturday. Philadelphia (9-7-7) hosts DC United next Saturday.

Notes

- Set piece nerves: Chicago's shape in the run of play is very solid, but their marking and clearances on set pieces is infuriatingly awful. Philadelphia's entire offense down the stretch involved getting free kicks or corners, 'putting one in the mixer,' and hoping for the best - and it consistently worked. Only SJ's heroics and a goal-line clearance from Alex kept this from being a sad story of a sad team who sadly couldn't clear a ball in the box and now is sadly full of sadness.

- Whining, crying Philly: It's a little easier to understand how Philadelphia has gotten so many red cards against opponents after watching this game. Danny Cruz's play, in particular, is infuriating - completely reckless and out-of-control, but somehow still constantly aggrieved and whining. The first two yellows, against Anibaba and Alex, were drawn by Cruz, who seemed astonished that someone wasn't sent packing. The Alex tackle was particularly choice, as Cruz ran him over then complained about stumbling on his prone body. PRO, get it together.

- Whither our DPs?: You'd not know it by looking at the team sheet, but the Chicago Fire actually have two (2) designated player strikers on the roster. Neither made the team sheet today. Inverse moneyball!

Air Force Academy Announces Baseball Recruits for 2014

The Falcons always have to wait on their announcements as they have to show up on campus first. They are always a bit behind but they appear to have some quality to announce.

USAFA Recruits for 2013 Announced

This is my third recruiting article for the MWC. Air Force announces their recruits late as I was told they don't announce until they show up for basic training. Boy, that's different. This is the third article that will cover the whole of the MWC baseball programs. San Jose State and New Mexico have been posted previously.

As I said the Falcons do things a bit differently. They don't announce their signings until they show up on campus for, get this, basic training. Ah, yes, I remember those days and I wasn't at an academy. I was at Fort Ord in California and that's another story for another time. The academies also have other hurdles to jump as their recruits must be good if not great students and grade high on the character charts. As the photo shows they do learn to salute properly and I want you to compare that with television and movie salutes. I wander again. You'd think it would be tough row to hoe with that and it is. With that being said, I'd have to say the following list of recruits is actually pretty darn good. Will they help take the Falcons out of the cellar of the MWC? Only time will tell on that front but this does look promising.

Sam Ashey, LHP, Cinco Ranch HS, Katy, TX
Sam was 6-2 and 1.64 for an average high school team (17-13). That always means a gold star for me when a pitcher does really well for a team that doesn't help much. He had 63 strikeouts in 59 innings as it says 76 on the Falcons' website so he can strike out batters but the 3 walks is a misprint as he walked 17 which is still good. The error was Maxpreps and not the Falcons'. No biggee. He gave up 38 hits to go along with the 17 walks which results in a WHIP below 1.00 and that is always good.

Andrew Butler, IF, Waynflete HS, Lewiston, ME
Andrew was a finalist for the top player in Maine so he can play. He also pitched. At 6'3" he's a bit big for a shortstop but if he can cover the holes, so what. He also made an all-state team.

Anthony Denkinger, IF/OF, Dowling Catholic HS, Windsor Heights, IA
Anthony was considered the 34th rated shortstop in the US by at least one blogger. Didn't say much about him but he made the list which did say something about him.

Jacob DeVries, LHP, Medina Valley HS, Castroville, TX
Jacob was recruited as a pitcher but he could also hit. He was 7-2 and 1.20 in 52 IP. He had 95 strikeouts in those innings with only 24 walks. That's a bit too many walks but he reeks of power with the strikeouts. He gave up only 37 hits so think how he could have done if he hadn't walked many. The walks kicked up his WHIP to over 1.00. Find the strike zone, kid, and you could be somebody.

John Gamble, RHP/OF, Santa Fe Christian HS, San Diego, CA
John was 3-6 and 3.15 for a 15-15 club. He had 53 strikeouts in 53 IP. Not bad. However, the 33 walks did him in as he gave up 47 hits. He and DeVries are going to need to work on command. He received some AA notice in the preseason for both the 2013 and 2012 seasons. I guess what I'm saying is he has been noticed as a talent but the numbers don't seem to be there. He might develop.

Adam Groesbeck, IF, Turlock HS, Turlock, CA
There are lists and there are lists. When I view these lists, my eyes tend to glaze over. Adam made the PerfectGame preseason All-Region Team as an honorable mention. OK, so that means he's noticed by someone as a shortstop. But, it's preseason and I saw two other teammates make the same list. See what I mean? Then again, he hit .392 with 4 homeruns for a team that went 28-3. He appears to be a late bloomer to me.

Jordan Hanlin, C, Jesuit HS, Rocklin, CA
I always seem to find conflicting information on players. I found a news article stating that Jordan hit .315 this past season for Jesuit. I then had to do a bit of searching and found some stats on MaxPreps which had him at .329. I'll go with that and the one homerun. He's a little on the slight side for a catcher at 5'10" and 175 but I've seen much smaller guys at the position that perform their duties well.

Bradley Haslam, IF, San Marino HS, San Marino, CA
The MaxPreps site have him listed as a 3B and shortstop. He hit .355 and 1 for a team that went 15-11. He's another of a long line of southern California players as that area is loaded with talent and there is plenty to go around. Didn't find much more on him.

Griffin Jax, RHP/IF, Cherry Creek HS, Greenwood Village, CO
Griffin gets a little more than a gold star for being recruited by the Falcons. He's a local kid and that's always a nice touch. He also garnered the top player in Colorado award from Gatorade. That's high praise indeed. He also got drafted in the 12th round by the Phillies but decided on a hell of a future instead. An opposing coach said he's the top hitter in the state so that begs the question whether he will be a pitcher (and he's a good one) or a position player. He's 6'5" so I suspect he plays third. Enough of the accolades, he's a good player and I think he'll start - somewhere.

Tyler Jones, IF, Coppell HS, Coppell, TX
Projects as a 3B as he has good size at 6'1" and 190. The only thing of note I could find is that he was a participant in a home run hitting contest which says a lot even without the results. Oh, he hit four with the longest at .413. Careful, here, as you know most coaches hate it when players enter these things. It can ruin swings. But, he does have power.

Travis Neubeck, C/RHP, Hill-Murray HS, Hugo, MN
Travis made the All-USA All-Minnesota team as an honorable mention as a catcher. Got some interest from Arizona, Boston College, Michigan, and Minnesota before signing on with Air Force.

Nathan Stanford, RHP, Harding Academy HS, Memphis, TN
Nathan makes All-State his junior year and received a bunch of pre-season awards. He lived up to the accolades and possibly could start for the Falcons. At 6'5" and 170 he is a bit thin but I'm sure he'll fill out. This kid has my vote for dark horse freshman for the Falcons.

Russell Williams, IF, McKinney Boyd HS, McKinney, TX
Russell is another big infielder (6'3" 185) coming in to the program. Touted for his defense and was rated highly in Texas. That's high praise indeed as there are many teams in Texas and they all take baseball seriously.

The Falcons have had their problems the last few years but they keep coming back to prove their worth. Will this worth prove enough to get them out of the cellar? Only the playing field will show that. The best of this lot appear to be Russell Williams, Griffin Jax, and Sam Ashey. Hard to choose as there were some good ones. My choice for hidden gem is Jacob DeVries; he's a lefty.

Police offer safety if Egyptian protests end

CAIRO (AP) ? Authorities offered "safe passage and protection" Thursday for thousands of supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi if they end two large sit-ins in Cairo.

The Interior Ministry's offer appears to be the first step by Egypt's new leadership to clear away the Morsi supporters from where they have been camped since shortly before he was toppled by the army July 3.

The move came as an influential ultraconservative cleric warned that using violence to break up the protests will lead to more bloodshed.

The organizers of the sit-ins outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque in eastern Cairo and a smaller one across the city near Cairo University's main campus in Giza portray the protests as evidence of the enduring support for Morsi's once-dominant Muslim Brotherhood.

On Wednesday, Egypt's military-backed Cabinet ordered the Interior Ministry, which is in charge of the police, to disperse the sit-ins, arguing that they posed a threat to national security and terrorized citizens.

"The Interior Ministry ... calls on those in the squares of Rabaah al-Adawiya and Nahda to listen to the sound of reason, side with the national interest and quickly leave," Interior Ministry spokesman Hany Abdel-Latif said in a televised address.

"Whoever responds to this call will have a safe passage and protection," he added.

The offer raised the possibility of another round of violence if security forces move on the Morsi supporters. By Thursday afternoon, there were no significant actions against the protesters in either camp. An army helicopter flew low over the eastern Cairo sit-in, where protesters spoke of being ready for martyrdom.

Many wore helmets and carried sticks. At one end of the camp, a second wall of sandbags and bricks was erected against a possible attack.

Egyptian police have a track record of deadly crackdowns on street protests, and Wednesday's Cabinet move effectively gave security forces the mandate to act as they see fit. At least 130 Morsi supporters have died in such clashes since his ouster.

Al-Jazeera broadcast an emotional appeal by influential cleric Mohammed Hasaan, who warned the military that a bloody confrontation would plunge it into conflict with Egypt's Islamists.

"The right of life is great, and no one has the right to take it away, except God," Hasaan said in a 17-minute address. "Don't let your brothers be slaughtered because they differ with you politically or because they went out to defend what they think is right."

The military overthrew Morsi in a coup following protests by millions of people demanding that he step down after a year in office as Egypt's first democratically elected president.

He has been in detention since, along with several leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood. Morsi's Islamist supporters demand that he be reinstated and refuse to join the military-sponsored political process.

Senior Brotherhood leader Essam el-Erian was defiant in the face of the growing pressure, saying on his official Facebook page that "the people will be victorious."

At the Giza sit-in, Brotherhood protester Saad Mohammed sounded another defiant note, claiming that the number of protesters there grew after the government's warning.

"We are not afraid," he said.

Earlier, the Interior Ministry had said it would not clamp down on the protesters but will take gradual measures including warnings, water cannons and tear gas to minimize casualties.

Privately, the Rabaah protesters acknowledge that their sit-in is their last bargaining chip against the military and loyal media that label the encampment as a launching pad for terrorists. Islamic militants also have been stepping up attacks against security forces in lawless areas in the Sinai Peninsula, raising fears that extremists could exploit the anger over Morsi's removal to spread insurgency.

The Brotherhood has long been one of the most powerful political forces in Egypt, even during its decades in the opposition to autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak, himself ousted in a popular uprising in 2011.

But after a series of election wins, including Morsi's narrow victory last year, the group has fallen from popular favor.

Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei sought to end the debate whether Morsi was ousted by a coup or a popular uprising.

After talks with Germany's foreign minister, ElBaradei said Morsi was forced from office because millions demanded it.

"We have moved beyond discussing this issue," said the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency.

Israel's Orthodox drag queen

Shahar Hadar, an Israeli Orthodox Jew, prepares for a drag queen show at a gay club in Jerusalem, July 29, 2013.

Hadar, a telemarketer by day, has taken the gay Orthodox struggle from the synagogue to the stage, beginning to perform as one of Israel's few religious drag queens.

His drag persona is that of a rebbetzin, a female rabbinic advisor, a wholesome guise that stands out among the sarcastic and raunchy cast of characters on Israel's drag queen circuit.

Washington, DCResearchers reviewed the likelihood of continued changes to the terrestrial climate, including an analysis of a collection of 27 climate models. If emissions of heat-trapping gases continue along the recent trajectory, 21st century mean annual global warming could exceed 3.6 F ( 2 C) over most terrestrial regions during 2046 to 2065 and 7.2 F (4 C) during 2081-2100. If warming occurs at this pace, it will probably be the most rapid large climate change in the last 65 million years.

The review, published in the August 2 issue of Science, was conducted by Stanford University's Noah Diffenbaugh and the director of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology Chris Field.

"With a high scenario for future greenhouse gas emissions, the largest warming occurs over the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, but all land areas warm dramatically," remarked Field

The scientists used the Coupled Model Intercomparison Phase 5 (CMIP5), which includes results from 27 different models. They reviewed information about the aspects of climate change that drive biological response; a comparison of current and future climate change with the past, including the rate and magnitude of the change; and the context in which the change is occurring. Results in the CMIP5 archive reflect the current state of understanding about the way the physics of the atmosphere and oceans respond to changes in concentrations of greenhouse gases released by human activity.

The researchers emphasize that there are numerous uncertainties about the magnitude of future climate change, such as energy feedbacks from clouds and the carbon cycle. The largest uncertainty is the level of greenhouse gas emissions from future human activity. Despite these uncertainties several existing conditions, especially ongoing demand for fossil fuels, makes some future climate change a certainty.

"What is perhaps most noteworthy is the rate of change," remarked Diffenbaugh. "For instance, the rapid global warming event that occurred some 55 million years ago was as large as these warming projections, but that event occurred over many thousands of years, not a mere century."

The duo emphasized that the rate of change will ultimately by determined by human decisions and innovations regarding greenhouse gas emissions. "The future of the planet lies in our hands," said Field.

NBA free agency 2013: Winners & losers

Chris Paul was the biggest free-agent name on the market, and once the Clippers were able to secure coach Doc Rivers?who could go down as the best coach in franchise history?Paul was on board, signing a max deal.

Rivers, also taking the reins when it comes to personnel moves, showed himself to be adept in that regard, bringing in shooters Jared Dudley and J.J. Redick, while also adding veteran backup guard Darren Collison. They did have to give up guard Eric Bledsoe, but it was unlikely the team would have been able to afford him anyway.

Colo. police seek help with high-profile cold case

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) ? Colorado investigators are asking for help finding a man suspected of killing Sid Wells, a 22-year-old college student who was dating actor-director Robert Redford's daughter when he was shot to death 30 years ago.

Boulder police issued a statement Wednesday saying they're looking for Thayne Smika, who is still being sought after a murder warrant was issued for his arrest in 2010.

Wells' brother found his body Aug. 1, 1983, in Wells' condominium. He had been shot in the head with a shotgun.

The case attracted worldwide media attention when Redford halted production of "The Natural," being filmed on location in Buffalo, N.Y., and came to Boulder for Wells' funeral.

Wells and Redford's daughter Shauna, then 22, were both students at the University of Colorado and lived in the same building.

Police suspected Smika, Wells' roommate, and arrested him a few months after investigators said they linked him to the murder. Smika was never prosecuted because the district attorney at the time declined to take the case.

Smika left the area, and in 1986 his abandoned car was found in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Robert Redford said in 1997 that Wells' murder still haunted him.

"It's like a partially opened door with a very dark room behind it," he said.

In 2010, the Boulder County District Attorney's Office agreed to review the case and approved an arrest affidavit for Smika. But authorities could not find him and asked Wednesday for the public's help. Smika's bail was set at $5 million after the warrant was issued.

"It's past time for justice for Sid Wells and his family," said Boulder Deputy Police Chief Dave Hayes, one of the first detectives to investigate the case.

"Thayne Smika escaped a first-degree murder charge, and has likely been living a life of freedom while the Wells family has been grieving for three decades," he said a statement Wednesday.

Police said Smika has been at large since he disappeared from the Boulder area in 1986 and that he might have fled the country.

Smika, who was often late with rent, was supposed to pay Wells that afternoon, investigators said.

Wells' mother, June Menger, who lived in Longmont in 2011, said she was very happy to learn about the arrest warrant.

"It's definitely a step forward that we've been waiting for years," Menger told the Boulder Daily Camera at the time. "We've always felt he was the one, but to get an arrest warrant is a big deal."
