Click to view large (1600x1200 pixels) 3Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC)
iTC?s throttle-by-wire set up improves throttle response, smoothes power delivery and ensure precision throttle control even in the roughest of terrain. The Rotax engine uses a throttle-by-wire system for more accurate throttle response and a smooth power delivery. If the driver?s foot bounces on the gas pedal in rough terrain, iTC detects unwanted bounces and filters the input, resulting in more throttle accuracy, especially at low speed. It also reduces the number of moving parts in the vehicle; has no cable to adjust, lubricate, or replace; and the system has an increased life span.

85-hp Rotax 1000 engine
Liquid-cooled, 8-valve Rotax 976cc V-twin pumps out a class-leading 85 horsepower, yet is refined thanks to EFI and iTC.The liquid-cooled, single overhead cam power plant features four valves per cylinder and is fed by a 54-mm Bosch? throttle body and two VDO Seimens? fuel injectors. The sophisticated electronic fuel injection system automatically keeps the engine's performance at its peak, regardless of temperature or altitude.

Quick-ratio steering system (10.2:1)
A quicker steering ratio means more responsive handling with pinpoint accuracy and control. The steering ratio of the Can-Am Commander is 10.2:1. This translates to more accurate, responsive and precise control.

Double A-arm front suspension with dive-control geometry
The Can-Am Commander's double A-arm front suspension is designed with dive-control geometry that works to eliminate diving under heavy breaking and rough terrain. The front end features 10 in. of travel (25 cm) and front Air Control Suspension (ACS) with FOX8 HPG piggyback shocks

Click to view large (1600x1200 pixels) 2Torsional Trailing arm Independent (TTI) rear suspension with external sway bar
Exclusive to Can-Am, TTI eliminates scrub and camber changes by using proprietary geometry that places the pivot points ahead of the rear wheels. The Torsional Trailing arm Independent (TTI) rear suspension is the only independent rear suspension that eliminates scrub and camber changes. Because the pivot points are ahead of the wheels, the rear wheels pivot up and down, which ensures that the vehicle only moves in the direction you point it. TTI has fewer parts than competitive designs and significantly decreases tire wear.

11-in. of ground clearance

(AP) ? Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton urged people to participate in service projects, saying there's a chain of service that links generations of Americans from all across the country.

Clinton is the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. On Saturday she spoke at a summit on the National Mall for the National Day of Service.

Clinton said she was inspired by the volunteer work of her grandmother, Dorothy Rodham, who began as a child volunteer teaching migrant workers English and kept up her volunteer efforts for her entire life.

President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, are participating in service projects throughout the Washington area.

Volunteers also are organizing service events in all 50 states.

The Antitrust Hotch Potch: Free vs. Google - Ad Blocking and Net ...

LogoFree

On 3 January, France?s second largest internet service provider (?ISP?), Free, started blocking online adverting for its subscribers. This in itself did not come across as shocking, as this feature is already available to consumers (e.g., Adblock Plus on Firefox and Chrome). It was, rather, the way Free activated this functionality that was the subject of controversy in France. Indeed, ?the change took place through an unannounced update of its modems and was activated by default. Internet content providers, who rely on advertising to provide free content and services to end-users, reacted immediately, asking the French authorities to take action.

It would be easy to presume that Free acted solely in its customers? interests, however it appears that this would not entirely reflect the reality. The move seems, rather, to have been aimed at threatening Google?s revenues, which are mainly based on advertising. Indeed, Free has long tried to make Google pay for optimal access to its network. The battle between the two companies rests upon the fact that YouTube (Google?s video-streaming service) requires large amounts of bandwidth to be used in order for subscribers to connect. Free therefore considers that Google should participate financially in upgrading of the system to handle these bandwidth needs. In a decision of 22 November 2012, the French telecoms regulator (?ARCEP?) opened an administrative enquiry into the technical and financial terms and conditions governing the routing of online traffic between YouTube and Free.

This debate should also be?seen in the context of the necessity for ISPs to make investments in ultrafast broadband infrastructures, as whished by the French government. Through its action, Free may want to raise the problem that, without the participation of content providers,? "investmentswill have to be made at a slower pace".

Notwithstanding the company?s motivations, the possibility for ISPs to regulate the content available online raises issues relating to the principle of net neutrality. Net neutrality is defined in EU instruments as the ability of end users to access and distribute information or run applications and services of their choice. It follows that all content and data should be treated in exactly the same way, regardless of their origin. Yet, by filtering web content, Free arguably went against this principle.

Fleur Pellerin, the French digital minister, reacted quickly and Free removed its ad blocker on 8 January. The round table on Net Neutrality that the minister subsequently decided to organise was not deemed sufficient. The issue was referred to the Conseil National du Num?rique, a committee created in April 2011 to help French public authorities on the stakes of the digital economy and to create on-going discussions. No decision was taken as to a possible law which would enshrine net neutrality. ISPs were left free to monitor Internet content. ??

The Digital Agenda Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, also reacted by publishing an article in a French newspaper. She invoked customers? freedom to make choices regarding their Internet subscription and online activity. However, she advocated for the possibility to subscribe to differentiated, limited Internet offers, possibly for a lower price. Transparency and effective consumer control were considered as crucial elements in this regard: ?on net neutrality, consumers need effective choice on the type of internet subscription they sign up to. That means real clarity, in non-technical language.? She then acknowledged the possibility for ISPs to distribute software aiming at blocking some or all advertising, but reminded stakeholders that many content providers rely on an advertising-driven business model and that ?businesses should accept that different consumers will have different preferences, and design services accordingly?. Interestingly, it seems that Neelie Kroes? current position differs from her previous opposition to tiered access, for which she advocated in 2010 when she said?that ISP ?shouldn?t be allowed to limit the access to service or content out of commercial motivation, but only in cases of security issues and spamming.?

Despite reaffirming the importance of the principle of net neutrality, both the French government and the Digital Agenda Commissioner have implicitly supported ISPs. Google, on the contrary, faces various investigations at the EU and the Member States levels. For instance, the French authorities are currently looking into allegations that Google has paid less taxes than required. In this fight between Free and Google, the French ISP seems, therefore, to have the upper hand.

On 17 January, Free reinstated the advertising blocking functionality for some of its customers (including approximately 5 million subscribers to Free Mobile). This time, Free proposed it as an option which is by default inactive. Finally, it should be noted that French newspapers are also trying to force Google to pay them for referencing their content. Today, Google reportedly?proposed a ?50 million deal to French publishers. This would involve Google buying advertising space on newspaper and online, as well as a commercial collaboration between the publishers and Google?s search engine and, finally, the use by publishers of AdSense, Google?s advertising platform.

600 cats saved from becoming Chinese dinners

?

Volunteer animal rescuers save 600 cats destined to be served as dinner in southern China. A road accident in which dozens of wooden crates stuffed with the felines revealed that a truck was bound with them to market on January 15 in city of Changsha, according to the Changsha Small Animal Protection Association. Unfortunately, at least 100 cats had already succumbed to the death ride.

?

Photographs of the rescue were widely shared on Chinese social media sites, despicting rescuers unloading the crates late at night in Changsha. A spokesman for the animal rights group said that the cats were clearly destined for dinner plates. Many of the cats were white in color and appeared to have been fattened in advance of slaughter. Many died or escaped in the cold after being held in the central Chinese city for 24 hours. A spokesman for the group said that it was clear that the cats were meant to be consumed since the owners had taken little care for their welfare. More than 50 crates were piled on the truck involved in the accident, filled with cats that had travelled for days without food or water. According to China Daily, an official news outlet, the cats were bound for restaurants in Guangdong, in southern China.

?

The animal welfare negotiated with the drivers of the truck to buy the kitties for the equivalent of $1,600. The cats are now available for adoption. This rescue does not appear to be the first of its kind in China. In 2011, for example, trucks bearing more than 500 dogs to be sold as human food were halted on a highway bound for markets in Beijing. While cats are not commonly human fare in most of China, restaurants in southern China continue to serve them up to customers. China does not have any laws protecting non-endangered animals.?

?

Eating dogs and cats is not limited to China, despite the European and American reluctance to eat them, as well as Biblical prohibitions. Ancient Americans in Mexico, for example, were known to eat dogs and developed a hairless canine breed specifically for that purpose.

Dunkin' Donuts plans to re-enter California in 2015

Dunkin' Donuts said on Wednesday it would open shops in southern California in 2015 in its long-awaited return to the state it left more than a decade ago when it was under different management.

Fiercely loyal Dunkin' Donuts customers have been clamoring for it to re-enter California, which the company said is the No. 1 state for grocery sales of its bagged coffee.

The coffee chain expects to open 150 to 200 shops in southern California by 2020, said Nigel Travis, chief executive of Dunkin' Brands Inc and president of Dunkin' Donuts for the United States. "We eventually plan to have more than 1,000 restaurants throughout the state," he said.

Dunkin' Donuts closed its last California store in Sacramento in August 2002. Customers complained that the firm's shops were run-down and outdated. Dunkin's marketing vice president at the time, Kenneth Kimmel, said, "We just couldn't break the doughnut paradigm in California."

Dunkin' Donuts parent Dunkin Brands went public in July 2011 with the goal of expanding Dunkin' Donuts.

The chain, whose current tagline is "America runs on Dunkin'", has since put greater emphasis on coffee and embraced its more blue collar roots by positioning itself as a more affordable alternative to fancier coffee chains like Starbucks Corp .

Travis said drive-thrus would likely be a significant part of the store mix in southern California, where driving is a big part of everyday life.

Dunkin' Donuts, which has been expanding westward in states such as Arizona, Nevada and Colorado, said it was recruiting franchisees for Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, San Bernardino, Ventura and Orange counties. At this time, there are no specific plans for offering franchises for sale in northern California, the company said.

California native Krista Thomas, marketing vice president at Fan Appz, said she became a "mad, passionate Dunkin' fan" during the 12 years she lived in Boston.

Now residing in the southern California beach town of Venice, she has had to settle for buying Dunkin' Donuts packaged coffee in grocery stores.

Thomas said it would be worth waiting for Dunkin' but admitted that her first reaction was, "Two years away? Come on, you're killing me!"

The chain's competitors in California, the nation's most populous state, will include national brands such as McDonald's Corp and Starbucks as well as smaller chains such as Peet's Coffee & Tea, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and Winchell's Donut House.

In May, Dunkin' opened a unit on a U.S. Marine base near San Diego, but access to that cafe is limited.

Microsoft's iPad-Killer Is A Flop, Says Analyst

Microsoft Corp.?s fiscal second- quarter earnings will be less than previously expected due to weak demand for personal-computers and the company?s new tablet, Surface, according to Brent Thill, an analyst at UBS AG.

Thill cut his estimate for Surface sales in half, to 1 million units for the period, which ended in December, citing ?gloomy sentiment? after the holiday shopping season, he wrote in a research report today. He cut his earnings per share projection for the quarter by 8 cents to 76 cents.

Microsoft initially limited sales of the device to its own roughly 60 retail outlets and Surface also failed to draw many customers away from Apple Inc.?s iPad and rival devices with Google Inc.?s Android software. A new business-focused version of Microsoft?s tablet, Surface Pro, is expected to go on sale this month and may fare better against the iPad, Thill said.

?Surface Pro is the more promising? model, he wrote in the report.

German inflation rises to 2.1 percent in December

(AP) ? German inflation ticked up in December, for an annual 2012 rate of 2 percent overall for Europe's largest economy.

The Federal Statistics Office reported Tuesday that prices in December were up 2.1 percent compared to the same month in 2011, up from 1.9 percent in November.

Price increases in 2012 came largely from the energy sector, which saw an overall increase of 5.7 percent for the year.

The rate is down slightly from 2011's 2.3 percent, though up from 2010's 1.1 percent and 2009's 0.4 percent.

The European Central Bank's target is to set policy to achieve an inflation rate of just below 2 percent.

CES 2013: 'Director Mode' Added to Aerial Drone to Aid Filmmakers ...

The proliferation of UAV drone technology in recent years has intriguing possibilities for filmmakers, making location scouting more convenient?and driving down the cost of aerial cinematography. But while they generally represent savings over manned flights, drones capable of lifting and controlling a camera from companies such as Draganfly ?and DroidAir?cost anywhere from $2000 to $22,000 or more.

STORY:?5 Products of the Future Dazzle at CES

Parrot, an eclectic French technology company (their other products include a Phillipe Starck-designed speaker system and a plant-monitoring?sensor) released their quad-rotor AR Drone in 2010, and the AR Drone 2.0, an updated version, last year. Marketed primarily as a tech toy for hobbyists, the drone costs $300 and can be controlled via iOS and Android devices. The AR Drone?s onboard camera passes a video signal back to the control device that allows pilots to steer ?by sight and record video. The 2.0 version carries a camera capable of capturing 720p video.

Intriguingly for budget-constrained film-makers, however, at CES 2013, the company showed off a soon-to-be released update that will incorporate what they call Director Mode into the control scheme. Director Mode adds the ability to tweak camera settings remotely, along with nine pre-programmed movements that the drone can execute with computer-controlled precision, eliminating human inaccuracies and enhancing picture stability.

?The idea is to make sure you get exactly what you want,? says Julien Galou, Entertainment Marketing Manager for the AR Drone. ?It allows you to execute moves that are very difficult to do smoothly with manual controls.?

The company also publishes a software development kit (SDK) that allows the technically minded to program the AR Drone 2 to execute even more complex precision maneuvers (see video below).

While the AR Drone 2.0 is an impressive piece of tech for $300, it is currently held back as a moviemaking tool by its 720p resolution.

However, with technology advancing ever more quickly, we would be very surprised if we didn?t see higher resolution offerings in the future as well as more in-depth controls aimed at filmmakers, making this a very viable option for the cost-conscious.
