Arab campaign to boycott YouTube, Google ... - Morocco World News

Anger over an anti-Islam film reached new peaks on Monday as a call for a mass boycott of the Google search website and video-sharing website YouTube was quick to ripple across the online Muslim world.

Arab activists launched a series of campaigns on Facebook, claiming that Google still makes some links to the U.S.-made anti-Islam film, which mocks the Prophet Mohammed, accessible in Arab countries.

The low-budget film ?Innocence of Muslims,? incited a wave of deadly anti-American violence in cities across the Muslim world targeting symbols of U.S. influence, from embassies and schools to fast food chains.

The call for a mass boycott included a change to the profile pictures of Facebook users supporting the cause.

The most popular picture appearing on Facebook profiles on Monday displayed a slogan, written in Arabic, which read: ?This person is boycotting YouTube and Google throughout Sept. 24 and 25. In support of our beloved Prophet.?

In response to the boycott, a Google spokesperson told Al Arabiya English on Monday: ?We believe in everyone?s right to express themselves freely, but at the same time, we know that users are aware of the role Google plays giving them universal access to information.?

Activists calling for the move claim that the website is still providing access to the film, according to social media users, despite Google initially blocking access to several countries in the past week.

The spokesperson said that the method of denying access to the film has varied from country to country, where in some places the film was only temporarily restricted in accordance with state guidelines.

?The video is widely available on the web. Where we have launched YouTube locally and we are notified that a video is illegal in that country such as in Saudi Arabia and Jordan, we have restricted access to the video.

?In the case of Egypt and Libya, we have only temporarily restricted the original trailer and exact duplicates,? she added.

Last week, Google, the parent company of YouTube, said the film would be restricted ?in countries where it is considered illegal by local authorities? such as India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and most recently in Jordan following requests by their governments.

YouTube last week restricted access to the film in Egypt and Libya after unrest in those countries, and has been adding countries to the list. Some others, including Pakistan and Sudan, have blocked access themselves.

Spreading the word

Organizers planning the boycott have urged internet users to use other search engines, other than Google, providing them with an alternative list of sites including Bing, Yahoo, Lycos and Excite.

They also urged Internet users to stop using Google Chrome and use other browsers such as Firefox and Internet Explorer.

The messages have been sent using broadcasts, or bulk messages, posted on social media sites and sent via BlackBerry messaging. Some groups had planned the boycott earlier in the week.

One message being circulated by BlackBerry users in the United Arab Emirates this week stated: ?YouTube refuses to remove Nabi [Prophet] Mohamad?s offensive movie off of their website, so we UAE ppl will boycott YouTube for 3 days (no YouTube at all). On 20,21,22 September. Please broadcast this message to everyone you know!?

On microblogging site Twitter, Muslims have united their sentiments for the cause under the hashtag #BoycottYoutube.

Twitter user @saiba_ahmed posted on Monday: ?Dear youtube, please would you kindly REMOVE the video of our beloved master!! .. That?s all we simply ask for!!!! #BoycottYoutube.?

Meanwhile, user @Shelly195 wrote: ?To Muslims all around the globe, do not forget to boycott Google and Youtube for today. #MuslimsStandTogether.?

Another user @MiladRazaQadri, who describes himself on Twitter as an Islamic Anasheed artist, posted: ?If @YouTube can?t remove the video that is against our Beloved Prophet (pbuh) then we should boycott and show them. #BoycottYoutube.?

Big losses?

The activists planning the boycott have high hopes that the internet giant will incur losses.

Organizers of these campaigns, who are believed to have grouped together from across the Arab world, said they expect Google will lose about $210 million in revenues and that its stock price will drop if internet users across Arab countries boycott the search engine, according to the Jordan Times.

The number of boycotters could stretch across the entire Muslim world however, with Muslims in Western and Asian countries also taking part, according to social media users angered by the film.

Arabs and Muslims account for about 8 percent of internet users in the world, an IT expert who spoke to the Jordan Times said on Monday.

Perhaps putting a dampener on the boycott, the analyst forecasted that the planned move ?will not have an impact on Google,? adding that less than 0.5 percent of Google?s profits are generated from the Arab and Muslim world.

We asked internal sources at Facebook, as well as external executives at Facebook's client companies, to tell us what they knew about Facebook's top spenders. Our friends at ComScore also supplied us with some incredibly useful information about ad impressions served in social media. We also looked at previously published reports about ad spending on Facebook.

Some of the results are surprising. Who knew, for instance, that cable TV company Turner probably spends more on Facebook ads than most other companies due to its heavy promotion of its channels, like CNN?

Our list has its flaws: Some key sources declined to cooperate with our survey, and we've doubtlessly missed some companies or gotten brand names ranked in the wrong order. Frozen Peas vs. Gel-Packs - Improbable Research ? Blog Archive

In the absence of a purpose-made ice-pack or gel-pack, people sometimes grab a packet of frozen peas to cool-down an injury. But just how efficient is a pack of peas? Various research projects have undertaken experiments to find out. In 2005, for example, investigators from the Department of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, devised a set of experiments to test the efficacy of frozen peas as compared to an ice-pack, a gel-pack, or a mixture of water and alcohol. The gel-pack and the peas did have some effect, but the ice-pack and the alcohol/water mixture were significantly more efficient. Then, two years later in 2007, another team, from the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, Lancashire, UK, undertook a further investigation ? this time featuring crushed ice, a gel-pack, frozen peas and ice-water immersion. Again, the gel-pack and the frozen peas were found to be less than ideal. But (readers may be wondering) given access to only a gel-pack or a packet of frozen peas ? which is best? The answer is to be found in a study performed before the two outlined above. In 2002, investigators at the Physiotherapy Department, Coventry University, Coventry, UK, had found that peas performed significantly better than professionally produced gel-packs.

?Application of frozen peas produced mean skin temperatures adequate to induce localized skin analgesia, to reduce nerve conduction velocity, and to reduce metabolic enzyme activity to clinically relevant levels. Flexible frozen gel packs did not cool skin sufficiently to achieve these levels.?

Education, psychological support key for defibrillator patients

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Because depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder are common among people with implanted cardioverter defibrillators, doctors and nurses should provide gender- and age-specific information on the potential psychological impact. Each month, 10,000 people, including children, have a defibrillator implanted to restore normal heart rhythm and prevent sudden cardiac death.

Improved patient education and ongoing psychological support will help people cope with the psychological distress of having an implanted defibrillator, according to a scientific statement from the American Heart Association.

The statement, published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, is a comprehensive review of the psychosocial and quality of life for people who receive an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to restore normal heart rhythm and prevent sudden cardiac death. It includes recommendations for improved patient care and identifies areas where more research is needed.

The authors recommend routine screening and appropriate treatment for anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, which patients with ICDs often experience.

"A shock from an ICD can be lifesaving, but it can also affect a person's quality of life and psychological state," said Sandra B. Dunbar, R.N., D.S.N., chair of the statement writing group. "It's important to look at this issue now because 10,000 people have an ICD implanted each month. They range from older people with severe heart failure to healthy children who have a gene that increases the risk of sudden cardiac arrest."

Before implantation, clinicians should provide clear information about the benefits and limitations of the ICD, prognosis and impact on lifestyle including activity and occupation.

"Education and support need to include the patient and the family and be broader than just a focus on maintaining the device. Providers need to help patients address ICD-specific concerns about symptoms, heart disease treatment, physical activities and end-of-life issues," said Dunbar, who is also the Charles Howard Candler Professor at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University in Atlanta.

Among the statement's recommendations to improve psychological outcomes, physicians and nurses should:

Emphasize that the ICD protects against sudden death, but does not improve your underlying heart condition unless the device does other things, such as certain types of pacing.
Assess the patient's concerns and psychological status at each follow-up visit.
Develop a clear "shock plan" so patients and family members know what to do in the event of a shock.
Help patients and their families deal with stressful situations that may develop with an ICD.
Provide gender-specific, age-appropriate information for children and their families.

Although pediatric ICD recipients make up less than 1 percent of the ICD population, complications are more frequent and these patients will live with the defibrillators for a much longer period of time, according to the statement.

"Experiencing a shock is distressing and patients have a wide variety of responses," Dunbar said. "Some find it very reassuring that it's working, while others find the actual physical sensations frightening and overwhelming. That's why we suggest that clinicians provide an ongoing assessment of ICD patients' psychological needs."

The statement identified several areas for further research, including predicting which patients are likely to experience psychological distress and how to alleviate it; the level of sports participation and physical activity appropriate for children and teens with ICDs; and when and how to discuss potential ICD deactivation near the end of life.

If, as reported by Adam Schefter on Sunday, the NFL will fine Broncos coach John Fox and Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio for Monday night temper tantrums that didn?t entail touching, Belichick needs to be fined, too.

As the US heads into the final three months of the year, 2012 is likely to end up as the warmest year on record for the lower 48 states, according to an analysis from the federal government's National Climatic Data Center.

"That's quite a jump," says Jake Crouch, a climate researcher at the center, located in Asheville, N.C.

The year's unusual warmth for the US results from a one-two punch, many researchers say. Normal swings in large-scale climate features, such as El Nino and La Nina, are superimposed over a longer-term world-wide warming trend triggered by the build-up of atmospheric greenhouse gases that come from burning fossil fuels, as well as from land-use changes,?researchers say.

Even if year-to-date temperatures were to fall back to the 20th-century average by the end of the year, 2012 would still be a record buster, Mr. Crouch says.

To pull off that feat of cooling, he explains, September through December would have to rank among the 20 coldest final four months on record ? highly unlikely given the historical record as well as seasonal forecasts for the final four months of 2012.

Most of the continental US ? from the Southwest up into the Rockies and eastward into Maine ? is forecast to see warmer-than-normal temperatures throughout this final period, notes Huug van den Dool, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center in College Park, Md.

The eastern third of the US is expected to see the drought easing ? particularly between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains and in the Southeast.

One key reason is the apparent shift in conditions from two consecutive years of La Nina to a weak El Nino this coming winter. La Nina and El Nino represent opposite states in sea-surface temperatures and wind patterns along the equatorial Pacific. Both can affect atmospheric circulation patterns well beyond the tropics.

For the US, La Nina tends to push average storm tracks across the continent father north than usual, while El Nino tends to drive them farther south. The onset of El Nino is expected to bring welcome rainfall to the Southeast and Mid Atlantic states. But the more southerly path for storms could lead to a dearth of precipitation farther north in sections of the country already hard hit by drought.

As a result, forecasters are calling for drought to continue through the end of the year for much of the western two-thirds of the US, with drought conditions likely to extend into the Pacific Northwest.

Globally, June through August posted the third warmest temperatures on record for that three-month period. January through August was the ninth warmest first eight months on record.

Of keen interest has been the dramatic decline in summer sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, which this melt season hit a record low of 1.3 million square miles ? 18 percent below the previous record set in 2007 and 51 percent below levels in 1979, when consistent satellite measurements of sea ice began.

Less ice means more open ocean to absorb sunlight during the summer, energy released as heat in the fall and winter. The decline not only affects local Arctic weather patterns in the fall ? found in forecasts of warmer than normal temperatures along northern Alaska ? but researchers are beginning to uncover ways in which the heat being released deeper into an Arctic fall and winter can affect atmospheric?circulation patterns at lower latitudes.

Indeed, the decline in summer ice has occurred far faster than models of global warming's effect on the top of the world predicted. For seasonal-forecasting purposes, this is prompting forecasters to rely even more heavily on their computer-based forecasts than they might otherwise, suggests Dr. van den Dool.

"The reliance on models will probably increase, because what is happening right now in the Arctic appears to be so fast that we hardly have any time to take data points and declare that we now know what is going on in the present climate," he says.

Intuition and sound judgment will remain key features of forecasts, he adds, "but it's a challenging situation."

If you leave your computer on when you are not using it, there are ways you can put your computer to use when it?s sitting idle. It can do scientific research, backup your data, and even look for signs of extraterrestrial life.

Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC)

If you want to help with the advancement of scientific research, the BOINC project allows you to use your idle computer to help cure diseases, study global warming, discover pulsars, among other types of research. You install special free software from their site on your computer and provide your email address and a password. Once you select a project, the BOINC software downloads units of work and crunches away at them when your computer is idle. BOINC has a screensaver that displays how the work is progressing. If you use your own screensaver, it will not interfere with BOINC, which will still run in the background.

SETI@home

One of the projects available in BOINC is the SETI@home project. SETI is the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence and the goal of the project is to detect intelligent life outside of Earth. One approach to their research uses radio telescopes to listen for narrow-bandwidth radio signals from space. These radio signals are not known to occur naturally, so detection of such signals can provide evidence of extraterrestrial technology. You can contribute to the SETI project by downloading free software to your computer that will download the units of the radio telescope data and analyzes it.

Folding@home

Stanford University sponsors a program, through its Pande Lab, called Folding@home, in which scientists study protein folding. Proteins help your body break down food into energy, regulate your moods, and fight disease. However, before proteins can carry out these functions, they assemble themselves, or ?fold.? This is a critical and fundamental process that still remains a mystery. When the proteins do not fold correctly, known as misfolding, there can be serious health consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer?s, Mad Cow, Parkinson?s disease, and many cancers. The understanding of protein folding can lead to the development of drugs and therapies that can combat these diseases.

You can help with the study of protein folding by downloading and running the free Folding@home client software. The software runs behind the scenes, making use of idle computing time.

System Silencer is a portable program that does not need to be installed. Running it places an icon in the system tray that you can use to access the program?s settings.

You can also use the Windows Task Scheduler to make your PC shut down automatically when you?re not using it.

Wikipedia Screen Saver

If you like Wikipedia, you can set it up to be your screensaver with the Wikipedia Screen Saver. The screensaver, which is added to the list of Windows screensavers (see our article for information on accessing the Windows Screen Saver Settings dialog box), displays a random Wikipedia page on your screen and switches to a new page after a specified amount of time has passed (30 seconds, by default). You can change the interval between pages and specify a number of minutes after which the screensaver will stop displaying Wikipedia pages and make the screen go black.

You can also have the Wikipedia Screen Saver kill open Firefox and IE browser windows, as well as other programs.

You can also use an idle computer as a local backup host, a personal web server, as well as many other things.

If your computer is just going to sit idle, and not do anything, you should leave the power save mode on to save electricity. If you want to be able to easily turn off the power save mode, you can create a shortcut or hotkey to switch power plans. You can also disable power management in Windows 7 or Vista, although we don?t recommend that if you?re using a laptop on battery power.
