10th most popular story: Joplin tornado 2011 by PRonlineNews

Tornado on the Ground

More than 1,500 police and firefighters from four states worked in a pouring rainstorm Monday afternoon, combing the wreckage of central Joplin for survivors of one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history.

The Sunday night tornado chewed through a densely populated area of the southwest Missouri city, killing at least 89 as it tore apart homes and businesses, ripped into a high school and caused severe damage to one of the two hospitals in the city.

Hospital Destroyed

?Everybody?s going to know people who are dead,? said CNN iReporter Zach Tusinger, who said his aunt and uncle died in the tornado. ?You could have probably dropped a nuclear bomb on the town and I don?t think it would have done near as much damage as it did.?

The tornado ? the fourth-deadliest since the National Weather Service began keeping count in 1950 ? caused significant damage to as many as a quarter of the buildings in Joplin, fire and emergency management officials said.

Parts of the city of 50,500 were unrecognizable, according to Steve Polley, a storm chaser from Kansas City, Missouri, who described the damage as ?complete devastation.?

D-Link Powerline AV 500 4-Port gigabit Switch (DHP-540)

The D-Link Powerline AV 500 4-Port Gigabit Switch (DHP-540) makes it easy to bring multiple Internet-ready devices online without having to run CAT-5 cable throughout your house. This intelligent switch uses your home's electrical wiring to send and receive data over your home network, but at $199.99 (list) it is significantly more expensive than competing products that offer the same performance and give you more features.?

Features and Specs
Unlike the Netgear Universal Internet Adapter for Home Entertainment-3D (XAVB5004) kit, which includes a 4-port switch and a powerline adapter, the DHP-540 is a stand-alone 4-port powerline switch. It comes with one Ethernet cable, a power cord, and a CD with installation and user manuals, plus a utility that helps you mange the switch. If you don't already have a powerline network installed, you'll have to shell out even more money for a Powerline AV 500 adapter to connect to your router (the D-Link DHP-500AV adapter goes for $99.99 list).

With dimensions of 1.6 by 5.0 by 3.9 inches (HWD) the shiny black DHP-540 is bulkier than the Netgear XAV5004, but just slightly. It has a small D-Link logo on the front panel along with six LED status indicators. The Power LED glows solid green when the switch is powered up and blinks during setup and when cycling through the security process. The Powerline LED is solid green when the switch is connected to a network and blinks when transmitting data. A green light indicates a link rate greater than 80 Mbps, amber is between 50-80Mbps, and red means the link rate is below 50Mbps. Off to the right are four numbered LAN LEDs (one for each port) that glow green when the port is connected and blink when it is receiving or sending data.

A button on top of the switch generates a random 128-bit AES encryption key that can be used for all powerline devices installed on your network. Simply press the button for two seconds and when it stops blinking, it is secure. Pressing the security button on other powerline adapters (within two minutes of the first one) assigns the same encryption key to each device.

At the rear of the switch are four numbered Ethernet ports, with number 1 getting the highest QoS (Quality of Service) priority, then number 2, and so on. When connecting devices to the switch, use port number 1 for high bandwidth applications such as streaming video or playing graphics intensive online action games. You can't manually assign QoS priorities with the DHP540 as you can with the Netgear XAV5004, however. Also on the rear are a power switch and a two-pronged power cord jack, and there's a recessed factory reset button on the bottom of the switch.

The DHJP540's utility is very straight-forward and easy to use; the Home page menu displays all powerline available devices on the network, their link rate, and quality (HD video ready or data transmission ready, depending on the link rate). A Setup Wizard icon takes you through the basic installation steps and shows you how to enable the security feature. The Advanced icon takes you to a page with three tabs; the Device tab opens a page that displays the device name, MAC Address, and firmware version and has a button that lets you update the firmware. In the Network tab you can view each device on the network, its location (local or remote), link rate, MAC address, and password. Each powerline device has a unique password on its label that is needed to change the encryption key on remote devices. The Diagnostics tab shows detailed information, including firmware version and date and the name and OS version of any connected PCs. The Home page also contains a troubleshooting guide and a customer support link that takes you to D-Link's website.

Leah finally gets good news on 'Teen Mom 2'

By Drusilla Moorhouse, E! Online

MTV

The good news about baby Ali outweighs the bad for Leah Messer on "Teen Mom 2"

At last "Teen Mom 2" has given us something to cheer about.

After biting our nails for a week, the results of Leah and Corey's baby daughter Ali's brain MRI were finally revealed Tuesday night: "Her brain is fine," the pediatrician assured her worried mother.

But it's not all good news ? for baby Ali or "Teen Mom 2" bad boys Kieffer and Adam....

LAST WEEK'S RECAP: "Intensive care"

First, the good news: After last week's cliffhanger, we weren't sure we could take anymore heart-wrenching scenes about baby Ali's developmental disorder. Fortunately Leah's pediatrician has good news ? mostly. "We have a good and we have a bad, but the good outweighs the bad," says the reassuring Dr. Porter. The scan revealed that one ? but not both ? of Ali's optic nerves is indeed small, and will probably affect her sight in that eye. But her brain is fine, and as Corey says later about Ali, "She was made for glasses." We agree ? that baby girl really is "too friggin' cute" in those pink spectacles.

OOPS, SHE DID IT AGAIN: Not-so-merry Christmas: "Teen Mom's" Amber Portwood to spend holidays in jail

Jailhouse rock: ?Despite failing at least one of her online college classes, Jenelle's 19th birthday is off to a good start, with her mom surprising her in bed with presents. Barbara cackles at her daughter's disappointment in her practical gifts: Fix-A-Flat and jumper cables! Now she just needs a cigarette lighter adapter so Kieffer can shave and charge his iPod when next the vehicle becomes their primary residence. See, Jenelle isn't exactly being "truthful and honest" with her mom about her relationship with Kieffer ? instead of avoiding him, she herself drives him to the police station to answer her charges of domestic violence. Maybe the cops will be impressed by his new buzz cut, but we suspect it's the involuntary result of a bad case of head lice.

Before this latest joyride with Kieffer, 19-year-old Jenelle sagely observes: "I'm just happy this is my last year of being a teenager, just because, like, when you're in your teens like no one really takes you seriously." Let's review the evidence: Kieffer is 20, and fellow reality mama Kailyn ? a full-time college student who lives in her own apartment with her toddler while working two jobs ? is still a teenager. Your verdict? ?

MORE: Could this be the future of Adam and Chelsea? (Gulp)

On the safe side: Aside from Barbara, most of Tuesday night's supporting cast ? especially Kailyn's friend Stephanie ? seem to be reading lines in an expressionless monotone, indicating they are probably on their 17th take of "So are you and Jordan having sex?" and its staged follow-up, "Do you have unprotected sex?" But Kailyn's storyline tonight ? a PSA on birth control and frank discussions about sex with your partner ? needed an introduction before her visit to the OB-GYN.

Later she tells Jordan she got a Mirena IUD, protecting her for five years. His embarrassed response annoys his girlfriend, who demands to know, "Why are you so uncomfortable about this topic right now?" Um, maybe because he's surrounded by a camera crew? We'd "plead the fifth" too, pal, if a grip was shoving a light in our face. In the end, Jordan apologizes and makes Kailyn not only smile but laugh. Twice. Girl should let loose more often; even though Kailyn believes she built a "six-feet hole" with her unplanned teen pregnancy, she's far better than Jenelle, who's almost burrowed her way to China by now.

MORE: "Teen Mom's" Jenelle ? Is she really back with slacker boyfriend?

Damsel in distress: Like Jenelle, we first see Chelsea in bed, complaining on the phone to her father Randy because on-again boyfriend Adam has abandoned her and taken baby Aubree with him. "That's your Prince Charming," sighs Chelsea's enabling papa to his little princess. "That's the way he's always been ? you need to decide whether you're OK with that." Adam ignores Chelsea's repeated calls, but he finally responds to a text with "I am keeping (Aubree) ... Shut up." From the guy whose texting history includes calling Chelsea a "fat stretch mark b----," this seems pretty tame. It hurts us to admit it, but we found ourselves sympathizing with Adam tonight. Whiny and needy enough on her best days, Chelsea immobilized and in pain from knee surgery would drive even a saint (including her father) away. ??

Correction: Green Jobs-Veterans story (AP)

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? In a Nov. 26 story about renewable-energy jobs for military veterans, The Associated Press quoted former Marine Ben Noland as saying he served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. Based on information from Noland, the story also said he served eight years in the Marines.

According to Marine Corps spokeswoman Maj. Shawn Haney, Noland's records show he was stationed in Kuwait, not Iraq and Afghanistan. Haney also said Noland served four years on active duty and four in Individual Ready Reserve. During Ready Reserve, a Marine can be called back to active duty. But he is not considered to be serving in the Marines during that period, according to Haney.

China and Argentina ratify crossed support for Taiwan and Falklands claims

Jiang Shusheng made the statement during a meeting with the head of Argentina?s Lower House Julian Dominguez who also underlined the recent Mercosur solidarity support to Argentina?s request in the Falklands/Malvinas dispute.

The Chinese top official originally arrived in Buenos Aires as a special envoy from President Hu Jintao to President Cristina Fernandez swearing in ceremony last December 10.

?China will continue to support the Argentine claim of sovereignty over the Islas Malvinas?, said Jiang Shusheng who added that ?solidarity with Argentina on the Malvinas issue is an invariable position of China?s foreign policy?.

Jiang Shusheng also praised Argentina for its role as the rotating president of the Group of 77 of non aligned countries saying ?Argentina worked for world integration and peace?.

The Chinese official called for the governments of Argentina and UK to resume ?Malvinas negotiations? thus complying with the principles and objectives of the UN Charter and the General Assembly resolutions, with the purpose of finding a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute?.

China has long supported Argentina?s claim over the Malvinas Islands, the same way that Buenos Aires acknowledges the principle of one China regarding the dispute with the island of Taiwan identified as the Republic of China.

Lawmaker (and former Agriculture minister) Dom?nguez said that the Argentine government ?has complied with all the dialogue requests regarding the Malvinas issue as mandated by the UN resolutions because that is the essence of the democratic system?.

?In response to the prudent and intelligent request from our President (Cristina Fernandez), during the last as well as in previous Mercosur meetings, for solidarity in support of our sovereignty rights over the Malvinas and other South Atlantic Islands, there has been an immediate and positive reply to that request from member countries?, said Dominguez.

?We will continue upholding firmly our dialogue vocation with Great Britain before international bodies, hoping this happens as soon as possible? pointed out the Argentine lawmaker who concluded stating Argentina wants the sovereignty dispute to be acknowledged.

?We categorically reject the standing political, diplomatic and an even military pressure UK has being doing with its representatives through the media, which are in the fringe of aggression, repudiated by all countries living in democracy?.

Earth's northern half plunged into darkness by axial tilt! Will sunlight ever return?

It sure will! The Winter Solstice occurs at 12:30 a.m. EST. After that, the days will start getting longer again.?

Winter officially arrives late Wednesday or in the wee hours of Thursday, depending on the time zone you are in.

The official time corresponds to 12:30 a.m. EST (9:30 p.m. PST, or 5:30 a.m. Universal Time) Thursday (Dec. 22). This is the point when the northern half of our planet will face directly away from the sun.

This means that days, which have up until now been growing shorter in the Northern Hemisphere, will begin to lengthen.

This happens because the Earth rotates on an axis that is tilted by 23.5 degrees, so the planet leans one way or another as it travels around the sun. This doesn't make much difference for folks living around the Earth's equator, but for those of us farther north, or south, this tilt?creates seasons.

The winter solstice marks the end of fall and the beginning of winter. During the solstice, the northern half of the Earth is facing away from the sun, hence it will experience its shortest day of the year as the planet rotates.

The effect of this tilt, and of the solstice, depends on your latitude. Everything above the Arctic Circle will remainshrouded in darkness, with no sun?that day, and to the north,?the North Pole?goes without sunlight for months. Farther south in the Northern Hemisphere, the solstice day becomes longer.

The opposite occurs in the Southern Hemisphere. There, the December solstice marks the arrival of summer. ?

For those of us in the north, the days may begin to grow longer, but the coldest days are still to come. This is because ocean temperatures?drive much of the weather?on the continents, and they continue to cool in the relative lack of sunlight this time of year.?

Christmas morning blaze kills 5 in Connecticut family (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? An elderly couple and their three granddaughters were killed when fire roared through a house in Stamford, Connecticut, early on Christmas morning. Two people, including the girls' mother, survived, authorities said.

Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia and acting Fire Chief Antonio Conte confirmed the deaths from the scene of the three-alarm blaze, which erupted just before 5 a.m. in the Shippan Point neighborhood near the city's harbor.

"It is a terrible, terrible day ... We lost five residents this morning," Pavia said in a video posted on the Stamford Advocate newspaper's website.

"This is Christmas Day. There probably has not been a worse Christmas Day in the city of Stamford ... Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and to emergency personnel on the scene," he added.

The owner of the house was identified as Madonna Badger, "and the people who perished were her mother and father, who were visiting ... and her three children -- three girls, (one aged) 10, and 7-year old twins," Stamford Police Department Detective Paul Guzda told Reuters.

Badger and a male acquaintance, described as a contractor who was working on the house, were injured in the fire but were expected to make a full recovery, Guzda said. Both survivors were middle-aged, he said.

Firefighters attempted to rescue those trapped in the burning house, but "they were pushed back by intense flame and heat," Conte said. He added that the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Video footage showed flames engulfing a house in a residential district of large homes.

Emergency workers later recovered the victims' bodies, but Conte said it could take a number of days for investigators to determine the origins of the blaze.

Stamford is located on Connecticut's shore on Long Island Sound, about 40 miles northeast of New York City.

Review: Take the time to curate Facebook Timeline

NEW YORK ? I?ve often joked that if something?s not on Facebook, it didn?t happen. Facebook?s new Timeline feature makes that adage even more apparent.

Timeline is Facebook?s new way of presenting you to the world. It replaces your traditional profile page ? the one with your headshot and a smorgasbord of personal musings, photos and other items to share with friends. Instead of just a snapshot of you today, Timeline is supposed to be a scrapbook of your whole life.

But these highlights are culled from what Facebook sees as important ? the stuff you and your friends have chosen to write or post photos about over the years. So it?s crucial to spend time curating it, so your life doesn?t come across as vain. If you?re not careful, you also might reveal skeletons from your past to more recent friends.

Once you?re ready for Timeline, you have a week to airbrush your life before it replaces your current profile. That?s not a lot of time when you have (cough, cough) years of your life to go through. I suggest focusing on the years since you joined Facebook. You can always add photos from childhood later.

To set up Timeline, visit http://facebook.com/timeline. Facebook will force you to switch within a few weeks, so don?t procrastinate.

Making a splash

Start by choosing a cover photo, the image that will splash across the top. You can choose a sunset, your dog, a hobby, anything that reflects who you are. Keep in mind the dimensions are more like a movie screen than a traditional photo. A close-up portrait of your face won?t work well, but one of you lying horizontally will.

Your old profile photo will still be there, but it?ll be smaller.

If you haven?t done so already, you can add where you?ve worked, lived and went to school. If you specify years ? such as when you started a job ? those items will be added to Timeline?s stream of life events, even if they took place before Facebook?s founding in 2004.

You can also add other life events to the stream, such as when you broke your arm and whom you were with then, or when you spoke your first word or got a tattoo. By adding them to Facebook, you signal that those things really did happen.

More on the stream

The timeline stream is your life on Facebook in reverse chronological order.

At the top are your recent status updates, comments from family and friends, photos you?re in and events you?ve attended. As you scroll down, you?ll get highlights from last month, then earlier in the year. Scroll down even further for last year, the year before that and so on. Click one of the ?Show? links to get all posts from a particular month or year.

Posts will be more sporadic the further you go back. You?ll see when you joined Facebook and the first post you ever made ? mine was ?Anick Jesdanun is wasting a lot of time on facebook.?

Beyond that, you may see details about high school or college. A colleague even saw the birth of her younger brother listed, after having told Facebook which of her friends were her siblings.

The bottom simply says ?Born? with your birth date and birthplace, if you?ve chosen to share that.

This may come across as a big privacy breach, but keep in mind that people could have seen many of those posts before by continually hitting ?Older Posts.? The difference is most people wouldn?t bother. With Timeline, you can jump more quickly to older posts.

Another thing to consider: Although your privacy settings remain the same, your list of friends has likely grown over the years, and your definition of friends has probably broadened to include parents, bosses and random flings at weddings. Someone you didn?t know in 2008 would suddenly have easier access to something you posted then.

Curating your life

You can change who has access to which posts. Perhaps you?d want to narrow an embarrassing photo from Thanksgiving to family members who were there. You might want to delete other posts completely or hide them so that only you can see them.

You can change the date on a post. For example, if you had waited a week to tell the Facebook world that you broke up with someone, you can change the date to reflect when all the screaming and crying took place. You can also add where you were, retroactively using a location feature that Facebook hadn?t offered until recently.

For major events in your life, you can click on a star to feature them more prominently.

You?ll likely feel overwhelmed when you see your Timeline for the first time. Years-old posts made by people you?re no longer friends with are still there. Musings on a trip or a long-forgotten event suddenly lack context. Your life may also come across as duplicative, such as when multiple friends post similar photos from the same party.

Here are a few tips:

? Start with your older posts. You were probably experimenting with Facebook then, and most of those could go into hiding. Plus, those are the ones you?d need to be most careful about because you had reason to believe only a few friends would see them.

? Find the button for Activity Log. Click that to see all of your posts at a glance and make changes to them one by one. Open Facebook in a new browser tab first, though. Every time you switch between the log and the timeline stream, Facebook resets to a default view rather than let you return to where you were. So have one tab for the log and the other for the stream.

? Think carefully about what you want to highlight when people scroll through your past. Facebook has a secret formula for determining which items are included in your highlights, using such factors as how many friends commented on a post. That may not necessarily be what you want to showcase.

Unfortunately, getting the stream to look right is difficult.

There?s no easy way to highlight something Facebook?s formula didn?t pick, without starring it such that it gets splashed across the page. I also couldn?t find a good way to remove something from the highlights without hiding or deleting it completely. There are events I wouldn?t consider major, but would want people to see if they took the time to browse through my past.

There also ought to be a way to star or hide posts in batches.

And oddly, Facebook includes stuff posted by others, but it doesn?t include items you?ve posted on other profiles. Older posts come across as one-sided without the back and forth for context.

Moving forward

Overall, I like the concept behind Timeline. I got a nice stroll down memory lane, and I enjoyed stalking my friends and uncovering their pasts, too.

I just wish it were easier to customize, and I don?t appreciate being rushed. Facebook spent months developing Timeline and rolling it out to its 800 million users. Why give us just seven days?

If you?re not ready to start Timeline, you can still view Timelines your friends have already activated. Just keep in mind that Facebook eventually will force you to switch, so you might as well do it now if you have the time.

You might also want to take this as an opportunity to clean up your presence on Facebook. Review your privacy settings and get rid of friends who don?t need to be there. That will be the topic of next week?s column.

Bonds files appeal of obstruction conviction

updated 8:33 p.m. ET Dec. 22, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds is officially appealing his felony obstruction conviction.

His attorneys paid $455 and filed a one-sentence notice to the federal trial court late Wednesday, saying that Bonds was asking the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal to toss out his conviction. The case will be randomly assigned to a three-judge panel later.

Bonds was sentenced Friday to 30 days of house arrest, two-years of probation and a $4,000 fine. But U.S. District Judge Susan Illston delayed imposition until the appeal is resolved.

Bonds appellate attorney Dennis Riordan estimated it could take as long as 18 months for a decision.

Bonds was convicted of giving an evasive answer to a grand jury investigating a Northern California-based steroids distribution ring.

(AP) ? When Danny Hurley took over at Wagner a year ago, he pledged to turn the woeful Seahawks around with a mixture of toughness and grit, qualities that are synonymous with the family name.

Consider his rebuilding project well ahead of schedule.

Latif Rivers scored all 18 of his points in the second half ? including six free throws in the final minute ? to lead the Seahawks to a stunning 59-54 victory over No. 15 Pittsburgh on Friday night.

"We've got good players, we practice really hard and I think our guys feel like they deserve wins like this and moments like this," Hurley said.

Wagner, which went 5-26 the season before Hurley arrived, certainly played like it.

Controlling the tempo and making Pitt work hard at both ends of the court, the Seahawks (8-3) beat a ranked opponent for the first time since knocking off then-No. 15 Alabama on Nov. 24, 1978.

Pitt (11-2) saw its nine-game winning streak snapped in emphatic fashion. Ashton Gibbs scored 14 points for the Panthers, but Pitt shot 40 percent from the field and turned it over 18 times while losing to a Northeastern Conference opponent for the first time ever.

"It's very big for us," Wagner guard Kenneth Ortiz said. "You know the Big East is one of the biggest conferences. Us being a mid-major, this is something big. Everyone wants to be top-ranked. We wanted to get it, we got our chance and we made the best of it."

The Panthers came in 70-0 all-time against NEC foes, but never led over the game's final 33 minutes.

"It's definitely not the way we want to play," Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. "We definitely took a step backwards."

Pitt has been nearly unbeatable in nonconference games since the Petersen Events Center opened in 2002. The Panthers had lost just one non-Big East game in the arena's first nine seasons. Now they have dropped two in the span of five weeks.

Long Beach State raced past Pitt 86-76 on Nov. 16, blistering the Panthers with a dizzying uptempo attack.

Wagner went the opposite way, working the shot clock and spreading the floor while trying to wear down Pitt's depleted backcourt. The Panthers are playing without starting point guard Travon Woodall, who is nursing groin and abdominal injuries.

Gibbs has taken over the majority of the ballhandling duties, and it has worn him down. He missed his first seven shots and finished just 5 of 16 from the field with four turnovers.

"We felt like them not having Travon would be a big advantage for us," Hurley said. "They were kind of laboring getting the ball up the court. Even on possessions where we weren't really rattling them, we wanted them to have a short clock."

The victory also proved a bit bittersweet for Hurley, who twice turned down opportunities to join Dixon's staff at Pitt. Hurley had served as an assistant coach at Rutgers before becoming a prominent high school coach in New Jersey. As appreciative as he was of Dixon's offer, Hurley knew when he got back into the collegiate ranks, he wanted to run his own show.

Along with his brother and assistant coach Bobby ? who starred at Duke 20 years ago ? Hurley has the tiny Staten Island, N.Y. school rapidly rising to respectability thanks to an upgraded roster and newfound confidence.

The Seahawks played fearlessly, not panicking after the Panthers built a 9-2 lead.

Ortiz and Tyler Murray outplayed backcourt counterparts Gibbs and Cameron Wright, with Ortiz getting out in transition to capitalize on sloppy ballhandling by the Panthers.

Gibbs, the preseason Big East Player of the Year, entered the game shooting just 36 percent from the field since Woodall's injury, and missed all seven of his shots in the first half. Ortiz had no such issues, going a perfect 5 of 5 to help Wagner take a 29-25 halftime lead, the first time the Panthers have trailed at the half since losing to Long Beach State in the third game of the season.

And Wagner ? just like the 49ers ? proved it wasn't a fluke.

Rivers shook of a rough first half to score seven quick points as the Seahawks went ahead 44-32. Pitt clamped down defensively but couldn't take advantage at the other end of the court.

Gibbs put together a brief hot streak to get the Panthers back in it, but every time Pitt appeared ready to take control, Wagner would respond with a big shot.

Pitt drew as close as three points twice in the final 36 seconds but couldn't get over the top. Rivers hit six straight free throws down the stretch and the Seahawks poured onto the court in celebration after the program's biggest victory in 33 years.

"I said to the coaches and I'll say to the players to make sure you have your phones charged, because you're going to get a lot of texts and a lot of calls," Hurley said.

Meanwhile, the Panthers search for answers.

The defending Big East regular season champions open conference play at Notre Dame next Tuesday. They hoped to come in on a high. Instead, they're left wondering how to get back on track.

"It's something we can grow from," Pitt forward Lamar Patterson said. "We've got to learn from our mistakes today."

Toddlers don't listen to their own voice like adults do

When grown-ups and kids speak, they listen to the sound of their voice and make corrections based on that auditory feedback. But new evidence shows that toddlers don't respond to their own voice in quite the same way, according to a report published online on December 22 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication.

The findings suggest that very young children must have some other strategy to control their speech production, the researchers say.

"As they play music, violinists will listen to the notes they produce to ensure they are in tune," explained Ewen MacDonald of the Technical University of Denmark. "If they aren't, they will adjust the position of their fingers to bring the notes back in tune. When we speak, we do something very similar. We subconsciously listen to vowel and consonant sounds in our speech to ensure we are producing them correctly. If the acoustics of our speech are slightly different from what we intended, then, like the violinists, we will adjust the way we speak to correct for these slight errors. In our study, we found that four-year-olds monitor their own speech in the same way as adults. Surprisingly, two-year-olds do not."

That's despite the fact that infants readily detect small deviations in the pronunciation of familiar words and babble in a manner consistent with their native language. By the time they turn two, American children have an average vocabulary of about 300 words and appear well on their way to acquiring the sound structure of their native language.

In the experiment, adults, four-year-olds, and two-year-olds said the word "bed" repeatedly while simultaneously hearing themselves say the word "bad." (To elicit those utterances from the young children and toddlers, the researchers developed a video game in which players help a robot cross a virtual playground by saying the robot's 'magic' word "bed.")

"If they repeat this several times, adults spontaneously compensate, changing the way they say the vowel," MacDonald said. "Instead of saying the word 'bed,' they say something more like the word 'bid.'"

Four-year-olds adjusted their speech, too, the researchers show. The two-year-olds, on the other hand, kept right on saying "bed."

MacDonald says the results suggest a need to reconsider assumptions about how children make use of auditory feedback. It may be that two-year-olds depend on their parents or other people to monitor their speech instead of relying on their own voice. MacDonald notes that caregivers often do repeat or reflect back to young children what they've heard them say.

While this study involved children with normal speech development, MacDonald says they'll be exploring potential applications for understanding or addressing delayed and abnormal early speech development.

Procter & Gamble partners with Mobeam to deliver coupons to your phone

Ah, remember those good 'ol days when we actually used those things called scissors and clipped our coupons when we wanted to save 50 cents from a bottle of Tide? Those activities have already been teetering on the brink of obsolescence since early last year, when Target introduced a program featuring mobile scannable coupons. Google Wallet and Walgreen's have furthered along the concept by offering them as well, and now Procter & Gamble are jumping on board. The company's teamed up with mobeam, a startup which has found a way to make mobile coupons readable using normal laser scanners, still the weapon of choice for many retailers. Next up, the two partners are hoping to work with OEMs to integrate the tech into new phones, push out an app to take advantage of it and begin field testing the process with shoppers and retailers sometime in 2012.

Once it kicks off, any company should be able to issue digital coupons; those who choose to partner with mobeam, however, will have access to opted-in consumer information that tracks which couponing websites the consumer visits, the location and time each coupon is redeemed and other items purchased using the app. Physical coupons will still be around for a while -- P&G asserts that there will still be plenty of coupon-clippers that hunt through newspaper inserts or print them out -- so the old-fashioned method isn't completely dead yet. We'd sure love to see mobile couponing grow to a point where more and more trees are getting saved, though.

HPV Test Spots Cervical Cancer Earlier Than Pap Smear: Study (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 15 (HealthDay News) - To catch cervical cancer or the lesions that can lead to it, a human papillomavirus (HPV) test is the best option for women over 30, Dutch researchers report.

Using it in conjunction with the more traditional Pap smear resulted in earlier detection of precancerous lesions and prevented more cervical cancers from developing, said study author Dr. Chris Meijer, a professor of pathology at VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam.

The study is published online Dec. 15 in The Lancet Oncology.

Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by HPV, a virus spread through sexual intercourse. Some HPV strains are more strongly linked with the cancer than others.

The superiority of HPV testing over traditional Paps at finding precancerous cervical lesions is established, Meijer noted. However, his team wanted to see if HPV testing also offered better protection and detection long-term -- in two screenings done over a five-year period.

They found it did.

While five years may sound like a long lag time between screenings, it is not, he said. "The Netherlands already has a screening interval of five years, starting from 30 years of age until 60 years," he said. The program is inexpensive and effective, he added.

In the study, Meijer's team evaluated nearly 45,000 women, aged 29 to 56. Women in one group got a traditional Pap smear and an HPV DNA test. The women in the other group got just the Pap test.

Five years later, all women got both tests.

The researchers looked to see whether HPV tests resulted in fewer high-grade cervical lesions and cervical cancer in the second screening, due to earlier detection and treatment.

In the first screen, the HPV tests found more of the early changes that can precede cervical cancer than the Pap smear alone did.

Five years later, far fewer women in the HPV group had more advanced lesions or cervical cancer than did the Pap-only women.

Four women in the HPV/Pap group were diagnosed with cervical cancer, while 14 in the Pap-only group were.

When they looked at cervical cancer or advanced lesions, 88 in the HPV arm of the study were diagnosed with one or the other compared to 122 in the Pap-alone arm.

The improved protection against advanced lesions, the researchers said, is due to the earlier detection of the precursor lesions. When they were treated, it helped prevent them from progressing.

In an accompanying commentary, scientists from the U.S. National Cancer Institute wrote that the Dutch trial does show the five-year screening interval is safe. But they added that it is unclear if the same results would hold true in a different population with different testing guidelines.

The HPV test can be done using the same specimen collected for the Pap test, Meijer said.

Costs of the tests differ. Meijer said Pap smears are about $38 in the Netherlands, while an HPV test costs about $64. However, the Dutch Minister of Health recently recommended lowering the cost of an HPV test to below that of the traditional Pap.

The new study is "further defining how we can incorporate HPV testing into our screening program," said Dr. Elizabeth Poynor, a gynecologic oncologist and pelvic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital, in New York City.

She noted that she doesn't think the HPV screen will replace the Pap test completely. "It may turn out to be a first-line screen. Stay tuned for more," she said. "Certainly ask your physician if you've had HPV."

In October, three U.S. cancer groups proposed new guidelines for cervical cancer testing, extending intervals between screenings and making other changes. These guidelines, issued by the American Cancer Society and others, call for combination HPV/Pap smear testing for women aged 30 and older.

After three normal Paps, women over 30 can have the test ever two to three years, according to the American Cancer Society.

However, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force remains cautious about the use of the HPV test, standing by the Pap as the best bet for now.

The Dutch study was funded by Zorg Onderzoek Nederland (the Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development).

Freddie Mac Continues to Be Gingrich???s Albatross (ContributorNetwork)

Reuters reports presidential candidate Newt Gingrich continues to defend his ties to mortgage giant Freddie Mac. The former Speaker of the House is taking his case directly to Iowans in a teleconference. He claims most of the $1.6 million given to him over six years went to overhead rather than Gingrich's income.

Here is why Gingrich is still defending himself a month after the revelation was made that he was given millions of dollars from the government-run mortgage holder.

Initial Claims

The Washington Post reported Gingrich first defended himself Nov. 9 at a debate sponsored by CNBC. He claimed he was working as an "historian" for Freddie Mac. Gingrich claims he warned the mortgage company of bad loans before the economic downturn and subprime mortgage crisis.

National Review stated Nov. 22 Freddie Mac paid Gingrich to advise the mortgage lender as to how to reach out to conservatives. Gingrich was paid by the same organization he blasted in a debate.

Opponent Backlash

Both Mitt Romney and Rep. Michele Bachmann have blasted their fellow candidate's actions. CBS News reported Dec. 12, a full month after the $1.6 million fee was made public, that Romney felt like Gingrich should return the money. The political opponents are near the top in polls leading up to the Iowa caucus Jan. 3. The Wall Street Journal stated Dec. 16 that Gingrich similarly asked Romney if he would return money he made at his own company, Bain Capital. When Romney refuted the comment, Gingrich had to backtrack and apologize.

Bachmann blasted Gingrich after he claimed she was inaccurate about his consulting fees he got from Freddie Mac. CBS News reports the two sparred towards the end of the last debate in Iowa before decision day in early January. Bachmann thought it was "wrong" for someone with ties to Freddie Mac to run for president.

Final Push in Iowa

Gingrich is hitting Iowa voters hard for their votes. His campaign will be pushing for votes even as six former executives of Freddie Mac are being sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Gingrich will be calling voters, setting up offices and talking to voters.

The Los Angeles Times states Gingrich held a 30-minute conference call in which he listed his conservative credentials. He also said he was being attacked for the money received from Freddie Mac. He explained in the phone call that the money was over six years and mostly went towards offices and overhead.

Few teens sexting racy photos, new research says (AP)

CHICAGO ? Teen sexting of nude photos online or via cellphone may be far less common than people think, new research suggests.

Only 1 percent of kids aged 10 to 17 have shared images of themselves or others that involve explicit nudity, a nationally representative study found. Roughly the same number said they'd shared suggestive but less graphic photos; while 7 percent said they'd received either type of picture.

The research suggests texting of sexual photos among younger kids is extremely rare but more common among older teens.

The results are reassuring, showing that teen sexting isn't rampant, usually isn't malicious, and is generally not something parents should panic over, said lead author Kimberly Mitchell, a research assistant psychology professor at the University of New Hampshire.

Previous reports said as many as one in five young people ? 20 percent ? have participated in sexting. But some surveys included older teens and people in their early 20s. And some used definitions of sexting that included racy text messages without photos, or images "no more revealing than what someone might see at a beach," authors of the new study said.

They focused only on pictures, and asked more detailed questions about the kinds of racy photos kids are sharing.

The researchers did a separate study on how police deal with teen sexting of photos. Contrary to some reports, that research suggests few kids are being prosecuted or forced to register as sex offenders for sexting. It estimates that nearly 4,000 teen sexting cases were reported to police nationwide in 2008 and 2009.

Slightly more than one-third of those cases resulted in arrests. About one-third of all cases involved teens and young adults; the adults were much more likely to be arrested.

The studies were released Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

The research shows that sexting can range from incidents that some teen health experts consider typical adolescent exploring ? the 21st century version of sneaking a look at dad's Playboy magazine, to malicious cases with serious consequences made possible by today's technology.

For example, one case involved a 10-year-old boy who sent a cellphone picture of his genitals to an 11-year-old classmate "to gross her out." The girl's mother called police; the boy cried when questioned by police, who concluded he didn't understand the magnitude of his actions and left the matter to his parents.

Another involved a 16-year-old girl who said she accidentally posted a nude photo of herself on a social networking site. A 16-year-old boy at her school found the photo and distributed it to 100 people when she refused his demand to send him more nude pictures. He was charged with a felony and was put on probation.

The results suggest that police generally aren't overreacting to teen sexting, said Janis Wolak, lead author of the second study. Some cases that aren't clearly criminal are still worrisome and warrant intervention by parents or others, she said.

In the first study, researchers questioned 1,560 kids nationwide by phone, with parents' permission, between in August 2010 and January of this year. The second study is based on mailed questionnaires to nearly 3,000 police departments and follow-up phone interviews with investigating officers about sexting cases handled in 2008 and 2009.

The studies illustrate how sexting may include a wide range of teen behavior, and highlight an issue "about which we as a society have gotten pretty hysterical and probably blew out of proportion," said Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston.

Exploring sexuality is normal behavior for teens and taking pictures of themselves and others is one way "just to find out what it is like," he said. "We've been doing that since somebody scribbled a picture of a nude woman on the side of a cave and the guys gathered around to check it out."

Sexting is different only because it is happening "in an environment that the adult community doesn't understand as well as kids," Rich said.

Dr. Victor Strasburger, an adolescent medicine expert at the University of New Mexico, said parents, schools and law enforcement authorities "need to understand that teenagers are neurologically programmed to do dumb things." Their brains aren't mature enough to fully realize the consequences of their actions, including sexting, until early adulthood, he said.

Instead of prosecution, he said, there should be more emphasis on teaching teens to be responsible with new technology. Kids need to be told "that when you put things online and even when you send them via cellphone, they're potentially there forever."
